Indian Textile Industry Adopts Green Strategy for Global Growth

The Indian textile industry is significantly changing its approach by embracing sustainable practices and improving transparency. This strategic move is a direct response to the increasing demand from international buyers for products that are eco-friendly and responsibly made.

New regulations from major markets, like the European Union, are driving this transition. These new rules require stricter environmental standards for imported goods, including lower water usage, improved chemical waste management, and reduced carbon emissions. The industry is adapting to these global standards to stay competitive and maintain its position in the world market.

A New Initiative for a Greener Future

To support this shift, the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) have launched the "Improving Transparency for Sustainable Business" (ITSB) initiative. Supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), this program aims to improve sustainable practices and transparency across South Asia's textile sector. The ITSB platform will bring together businesses and regulators to help companies better report on key environmental issues like climate change, waste, and diversity. This initiative, according to CITI Chairman Rakesh Mehra, will help the Indian textile industry strengthen its competitiveness and establish the country as a global leader in textile sustainability.
